Arts and crafts have been a part of my life since childhood. I learned sewing and needlework from my grandmother, who was a professional seamstress and re-weaver. During my teens and early 20’s I made most of my clothes and even made my sister’s wedding dress and veil.

In my 30’s I decided to try something new. I wanted something that wasn’t gender specific and decided on stained glass. Unfortunately I was just starting my career as an IT systems analyst/project manager so doing stained glass could only a hobby.

When I was lucky enough to retire in my 50’s I increased my stained glass work and also branched out into fused glass. While in transition to moving to Sequim I was unable to to work with glass and started creating painted canvas floorcloths to fill that need to create. This was the beginning of my love for drawing and painting.  I soon switched to painting on canvas and added colored pencils to my mediums.

I stopped doing stained glass a few years ago, but found that it greatly influences all my work. I love color and have a whimsical/story like style. I envision every day things like domestic living, classic trucks, nature and sports being done by birds, cats and other animals.

In recent years I have become immersed in the making of books, journals and boxes. I really love this work.  One of my favorite parts of making books is the sewing in the bookbinding.

I find that I have come full circle.

I LIKE TO CREATE ART THAT MAKES ME SMILE AND HAPPY WHEN I LOOK AT IT. MY ART IS MEANT TO BE FUN...OFTEN A LITTLE OFF-BEAT.

MY STORY

jwyatt.jpg

At the end of 2023 I closed my art business (J Wyatt Art). Making art for sale has been fun, interesting and rewarding. I met a lot of interesting people through the retail shows that I did, both at the Farmer’s Market and other art shows, and I loved getting to know the other artists. But it is time to move on. I plan to continue to make art, and hopefully to show it on occasion. You can check out the Events page and my blog for the latest of what is going on.

A love for acrylic painting began…

My Acrylic Painting designs are whimsical and colorful.  Many of these paintings were reproduced into cards, giclee prints, coasters, 8x10 ceramic tiles, tempered glass cutting boards and puzzles.

And passion continued with colored pencil art…

My Colored Pencil Art creations are smaller in design, but have that same colorful and whimsical side to them. I started doing colored pencil art to create a monthly desk calendar. Many of these drawings were reproduced into cards, giclee prints, coasters, 8x10 ceramic tiles, tempered glass cutting boards and puzzles.

Leading to the joy of hand-bound journals…

My Handmade Journals are hand-bound in a variety of bindings and variety of types. The covers are created using decorative papers/fabric, the body of the journals are made from 80# drawing paper that has been hand torn and folded. Most of them include a ribbon bookmark with decorative beads
